Slightly lighter

Published

On 9 July 2013, Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo introduced the first of more than 22,000 new, lightweight cargo nets. The development of this special product is the result of an inspirational and innovative partnership with AmSafe Bridport and DSM.

Simple, strong and smart

After seven years of development and testing, we now have a cargo net that is 50% (9 kg) lighter than its predecessor. Air France-KLM-Martinair Cargo is the first major airline group to secure its cargo pallets with the new net, which are manufactured by AmSafe Bridport using special lightweight fibres developed by DSM.

The people who work with the nets on a daily basis are also enthusiastic, because the lower weight makes them easier to use. But the fibre, UHMwPE (ultra high molecular weight polyethelyne), has two other important benefits: the nets now have a lifespan of five years, instead of three, and the reduction in weight means lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. And that’s a big plus for everyone!
