Air France-KLM tops DJSI for 11th consecutive year
On 10 September 2015, RobecoSam announced that Air France-KLM has retained its position at the top of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), as the world’s most sustainable airline, for the 11th year in a row. The DJSI is the most important international index measuring companies’ sustainable business performance.
For no less than seven years, Air France-KLM has also occupied first place as Industry Group Leader in the category Transportation. This covers air, rail, road and sea transportation, as well as airports. We are extremely proud to hold this position and feel fortified in our belief that we are on the right track. Together with Air France, KLM has shown its ability to take a leading role over the past years in placing sustainable development in civil aviation on the agenda.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Index*) is an international gauge for the performance of companies that place sustainability front and center in their strategy and business operations. Each year, the number of participants around the world reporting about their economic, environmental, and social activities grows. This creates a broad image of the development of sustainability around the world and among the sectors in question.
The Industry Group Leader report lays out what it is that makes the Industry Group Leader stand out from the others in the same sector. The report states:
“For the seventh consecutive year, Air France-KLM has been named Transportation Industry Group Leader. The company continues to demonstrate sustainability leadership in the transportation space, building on its long-term commitment to reduce its environmental impact, increase the company’s social value and local development. Air France-KLM has developed plans for improving its fuel efficiency by optimizing its routes and flight paths which has resulted in a 6.7% reduction in fuel consumption, an 18% reduction in hazardous industrial waste, a 10% reduction in the energy consumption, and a 3.9% decrease in water withdrawals compared to 2013. The company continues to lead the development and commercialization of bio-fuels as an alternative to fossil fuels, in line with the industry's mid- and long-term commitments to reduce CO2 emissions. On the social front, Air France-KLM measures and manages its economic impact at the destinations it serves, focusing on developing local economies, engaging with local stakeholders and upholding human rights”.
We are in a constant state of flux in relation to the environment and society. Several concrete long-term objectives have been formulated for a number of themes. The ‘Smart Energy' programme is for KLM the way to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020. Over and above investing in more fuel-efficient aircraft and integrating lighter construction materials on board, using biofuel is one of the ways to achieve this target. KLM works closely with suppliers and other parties to contribute towards the use of sustainable materials and resources throughout the value chain. The development of flights using biofuel would not be possible without the partnership that KLM has developed with a variety of organisations that are part of KLM’s Corporate BioFuel programme.
